ANL announced Mondiale VGL, Oceania’s leading sea freight forwarder, will be joining the Reef Recovery Program to assist in the restoration of The Great Barrier Reef. Every 20-foot container (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, TEU) from Mondiale VGL transported by ANL will see a contribution made to the Reef Recovery Program, which will directly support the Moore Reef Nursery.

ANL, a subsidiary of the CMA CGM Group contributes to the group’s commitment to acting for people, planet and fair trade, and particularly on initiatives that revolve around life below water.

Back in 2020 ANL started its Reef Recovery Program, a partnership with the Reef Restoration Foundation that aimed to assist in restoring the health of The Great Barrier Reef. Since its launch, several of ANL’s clients have pledged their assistance to the program that supports two coral nurseries: the Moore Reef Nursery, and one near Fitzroy Island.

Mondiale VGL’s Contributions will Benefit the Moore Reef Nursery

The Reef Recovery Program

The Reef Recovery Program facilitates funding to support the construction and maintenance of coral nurseries that are placed around the Great Barrier Reef. The restoration process involves mimicking the way coral naturally reproduce using coral rescued from the sea floor. This works by cutting collected coral into mother colonies, attaching them to coral tree frames in a sea-based nursery and then after 6-12 months of growth, the coral is placed back into damaged areas of the reef to aid in regeneration. This is a continuous cycle allowing for thousands of new coral fragments to be created from those initially rescued from the sea floor.

Supporting The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is home to the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem which covers close to 350,000 square kilometres and is home to thousands of different species. Protecting coastlines from erosion and flooding as well as generating clean air, it has been described as an “irreplaceable” part of Australia’s aquatic ecosystem. Since 1995 it has been estimated that more than 50% of its coral has been lost, prompting the need for action. The Reef Recovery Program is designed to aid the goal of replanting at a minimum 25,000 new corals a year, with the aim that by 2026 1,000,000 new corals will have been produced and replanted.

ANL’s Managing Director Shane Walden says, “There has never been a more important time than now to support the rehabilitation of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a vital part of Australia’s ecosystem and the support of businesses like Mondiale VGL only further grows the ability and scope of assistance. We’re very pleased environmentally conscious organisations like themselves have decided to contribute to the Reef Recovery Program, their aid will be a valuable contribution to the restoration of one of Australia’s most significant underwater ecosystems.”

Mondiale VGL’s CEO, Ray Meade had the following to say,

“We’re proud to get behind the Reef Recovery Program. Tying our participation to our shipping volumes means that we’ll see our contribution rise in tandem with business growth. It’s an arrangement quite unique to our sector, and we applaud the initiative.

“The wider Mondiale VGL team and I are looking forward to seeing the tangible impact of our support as the Great Barrier Reef is restored.
